Hedgehog and Human En Route to Paoli

Come, the rooms are filled with gas
so human took up hedgehog, with love
to the road.
hedgehog felt wild green onion,
a calf in the pond.
human smiled at the scent of burning firewood
and said "Gather ye rosebuds"
while May had fled further away, so they dodged leaves
mistaken for baby birds on the path.
At Lost River, they stopped to say thanks
for apple cider,
for waves of hot and cold, for the air conditioner.
Meanwhile, miles from there,
the squirrel said to the house,
"can I climb you?
so I can greet them as they come back home."
